About the Beginners Group
When I came to MSS it was pretty new and pretty empty. There was no group for beginner photographers. So I created one. I think it's grown into a great group of people, very helpful and eager to learn. If you're a beginner, you are most welcome to join. If you're a more advanced or professional photographer, perhaps you can help me out! Drop me a line or join the group to dispense your wisdom and help us beginners out :-)

My Equipment: Canon PowerShot A75

Unfortunately I don't have any spare cash to buy a digital SLR...which I really, really want. So, I have to make do with my compact digital camera and the camera on my phone. Oh well, no doubt I can learn tons about photography without having state of the art equipment.

My Favourite Internet Resources

There are so many good tips, tutorials and videos out there. Here's a list of my absolute favourites:

Expert Village Expert Village is a how-to video site. They've got many wonderful videos on photography skills. The link will take you straight to the photography videos.

Cambridge in Colour Photo tutorials with lots of technical details, examples and graphs. Well put together. You'll also find a nice selection of Photoshop tutorials for the basic touching up skills (levels, curves, unsharp mask, b&w, noise, etc.)

Free Digital Photography Tutorial Site A ton of great tutorials with loads of examples. Easy to use menu to find the topics you're interested in. Clear language, plenty of details.

Wikipedia Photography Portal Loads of info and history of photography. You'll also find information about famous photographers and in-depth explanations of photography concepts.

And for my regular dose of inspiration I use these two sites:
Photojojo and ADIDAP (All Day I Dream Of Photography.

My favourite Photoshop tutorial sites are:
Layers Magazine and PhotoshopSupport.com.

And finally two links that aren't favourites but they are on my to-do list: two free uni courses through MIT OpenCourseWare I still want to take.

What do you think about the assignments in the Beginners Group?

We're nearing the end of the year and I find myself looking back at the assignments this year and noticing a downward trend in the number of replies, especially when realising the membership has been steadily increasing! It would probably help if I were one of those people that could just sit down, read everything there is one subject and then confidently say they understood it. I'm really not that kind of person. I'm more of a hands-on learner and I've noticed that this is generally a slower way to learn things. So I read few books but go out and shoot and practice and make mistakes. Feeling discouraged....

This month I haven't taken many photos. I have many reasons (or perhaps they're excuses?). I'm busy and consequently quite tired, I had problems with my batteries & charger, I felt I was just not getting anywhere. I think that may have been the main reason.
