I find the photoshop channel mixer great for B&W conversion.Tick the monotone box and play with the sliders.I also use this with a bit of diffuse glow to give an infra-red look.For extra contrast I up the shadow and adjust highlights.Cheers Rod

James,

There are a couple of other options for B&W conversion you might want to look into. If you are using Photoshop CS2 or CS3 and shooting RAW, you should look into using Camera Raw for your conversions.

Go to HSL/Grayscale option and check the convert to grayscale box. This will give you control of:

Reds - Oranges - Yellows - Greens - Aquas - Blues - Purples - Magentas

(the layer adjustment Black and White only gives you : Reds - Yellows - Greens - Cyans - Blues - Magentas)

The Split Toning option in Camera RAW gives you control of Hue and Saturation in both Highlights and Shadows; and you can balance between the two.

(the layer adjustment Black and White tint option only gives you control of Hue and Saturation in the entire picture)

CS3 also handles jpegs and tiffs in Camera RAW.

The other option is to buy Dan Margulis book: Photoshop LAB Color (ISBN:0321356780) and study his discussion of B&W conversion using the LAB colorspace. You might not use RGB or CMYK for B&W conversion anymore!
