Pentax K100D Plus Other Equipment for $500 ... Good Deal?

A friend recently bought a new camera and offered to sell her older one to me.

She told me that for $500 I could get her Pentax K100D Camera with a 16-45or55 mm f/35 lens, 18-55 mm f/4 lens, a case, UV Filter, Polarizer Filter, 2GB card, and most likely another card.

I new to photography and know hardly anything about the equipment ... is all this equipment good for $500?

Well a Pentax K100D with the 18-55 f4 lens sells new for $649.00 on Amazon. You list a 16-45mm (or 55mm) lens there. Thats pretty much the same as the 18-55mm and at f3.5 is not much faster. Filters and memory are a bit of a bonus. It would be a better deal at $400.00 but its up to you if thats the camera you want.

But, that camera is only 6 Mega Pixels. Will this keep you happy or should you save now and buy better later?

A Brand New Canon XSi with a lens sells new for $799.00 with an 18-55mm lens.

You get a new camera with full warranty, a much better image sensor with 14 bit color depth and you get 12 Mega Pixels instead of 6. You also get a ton of features on the XSi that are not available on the K100D.

I'm a teenager without a job at the moment, so I cannot afford anything over $500 ... I could maybe afford $600, but not for many months. Is there any other place that you suggest that I could get a higher quality camera for the same price? Or the same camera for a lower price. I considered eBay, but I don't trust the fact in investing in something so expensive when I've never seen the camera in person. The camera my friend is offering is relativly new and I've seen it in action, so I know that it works well. What part do 6 or 12 mega pixels play in taking a picture? Also, I'm a begginer so is this a relativly good camera to start off with?

I agree. Also, I've come to understand that when I want someone to stay a friend, then I should never buy anything like a car or a camera from him. Going with a new system will give newer techincal features, a better system with a warranty, and maintain your good relationship with your friend.

Now if your friend gave you a little lower than market value, (because she's a pal), then perhaps you could forgive a lot. But what you are being offered is not particularly a steal, or a friendly act to get you better equipt. Bottom line; keep saving and buy the new system. Nothing beats new.

Hi..To answer your question 6mp or 12mp for taking a picture. You need the extra mp's for larger printing or for taking a photo, cropping something and then blowing it up (increasing the size). For leaving on your hard drive or using as a desktop photo 6mp is more than enough. You can get the Sony A200 at 10mp for around $600 dollors and if you wait until near xmas I would think you would get it cheaper than that. I have the a300 and find it to be very good even with the standard 18-70mm lens.
