Motor on camera or lense

Hi All

In another post we are discussing the fact D40s absence of an in-built motor is not given enough attention. I would like to know what is the pros and cons of camera having the motor and the lense having the motor. Is it purely a price issue or is there any technical/quality issue too?

Expert opinion on this is much appreciated

Cheers

In reference to the MOTOR i'm guessing you are talking about image stabalization?

Canon claims (and so far have proven) that "In Lens" is better.

Yes, it makes it more expensive. The point is that IS is different for a wide angle lens than it is for a telephoto lens. Canon and other manufacturers can fine tune the IS to "Match" the lens much better than an in camera IS System.

Having said that, an in camera system (for a brand you already own) has some great advantages. All your existing non IS lenses become IS capable! No need to go out and buy new IS lenses. Keeps costs way down.

Even though in camera IS is not as good, its still way better than NO IS in most cases.

Or are you talking about the Motor that handles the Focus??

Hi Franco..

I meant the auto focus lense (as What we get in Nikkon AF-S range of lenses..). However, i see your point. For me it does not matter much as I dont have any older lenses....

So It's unless I don't have lots of old lenses, it does not make sense to have a camera that supports Lenses with no mortor.. right.. ?

But is there any Quality differences in these two technologies that you know of..?

No quality difference. The motor system in the Canon is the best which is why it has been adopted by most manufacturers. It focuses faster and responds faster.
