Is Photoshopping cheating?

Here's something else I was asked....

Is manipulating a photo in Photoshop somehow cheating??
Does it really matter? or is what matters the final image - no matter HOW it got to that point?

I wouldn't consider using Photoshop (or any other similar software) cheating. I'm kind of in agreement with those that said they work to try and take good photos that don't need to be changed. I'm also in the same boat as the person that said they use Photoshop every day in their job so I don't really like to do a whole lot of Photoshop work. With that said, I think the software can bring a lot of good effects to a picture as well as help to clean things up (remove glare from glasses, etc.). I've actually used it to add myself to a vacation picture that I was not originally in but now looks really good as a family picture (I may post it so you can see how it came out).

I guess my only other thought is this... My primary goal is to take better pictures. All of the pictures I've posted so far on this site have not been Photoshop edited - only resized. For my own benefit, I would just like to know when I'm looking at other peoples pictures if they've been enhanced or not. A lot of times you can tell, but not always. As a novice picture taker I'm still trying to learn how to take better pictures and camparing my raw photos to those that have been edited doesn't seem like it would be very helpful.

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

Using photoshop or any type of editing program to photo after it been shot is consider a change in the photo details and would make a bad photo look better. On the other hand using a filter on the camera is only adding or taking off a color or rays, when you put a filter on the lens you are not changing the quality of the photo or look, but taking some color or ray like when you using UV filter, or polarizing filter you are making the change before you take photo not after so in my believe the best photo is the one that not change or edited.

It depends on how you look at it. First I would rather my own original picture taken with the camera to be what I see when I look at my subject.

When a photographer takes a picture it should be displayed as their work. If it is altered in some way using any method, then it needs to be stated. What I mean is in a photo contest makes sure the altered photo is put into the correct category, not as an original shot but one that has been altered. Most contests that I have seen have a category for altered or edited pictures. Some have several categories for edited photos, so a photographer may be able to enter their original and a version(s) of it being edited.

Until the end of time technology will continue to open doors. Some to make things easy and some to totally change the way we do things. By no means is using what is available to achieve the results your minds eye is looking for cheating. Those who stand in the way of progress get rolled over or passed by. Stop making box, make pyramids!

Isn't every photo a change of the truth then since the camera cannot see what our eye/brain sees?

No. Can't agree with with that. Even with film, the exposure could be off and the scene could end up darker and more brooding looking. Then adjustments including dogjing and burning could be done when printing the final image onto paper as ALL the masters did like Ansel Adams. Ansel Adams had developed the very first multi light source enlarger so that he could burn in or dodge with the flip of one of many switches.

Was he cheating, not. He simply created a system that enablem him to create final photos faster and more precisely than before.

Question: If he took the underexposed dark brooding image mentioned above and burned the image so that it looked like what he saw the day he took it to correct the underexposure, is he cheating?
