I also usually end up taking photos of something I wasn't looking for. The photos come to me for the most part. If I am looking for dragonflies, I end up finding a preying mantis. I go hiking and find insects or wildflowers hidden among the brush. I take the road less taken. I go off the beaten path in search of something different or unusual. I look under rocks, behind leaves, I bend down to see the things people often overlook, I try taking things at different angles, etc. Sometimes I get lucky. The most ordinary thing can become a thing of beauty when photographed well.

man I take pictures of anything and if there is a pattern to it , must be all the mistakes I make ..I look thru the lens and sometimes I don't see whats really there and other times I see more than there is..

I can't take a shot of a vista or a building to save my life. For me it is a matter of psychology, I think. I like people - I'm friendly and I always see the good in everyone (even when I see the bad too) and I think that comes out in my work. Right now, as a mother of two small children, I am in a place where photographing children is what I do the most. It will be interesting to see if this changes as my kids age, or if this is where I stay. I have noticed that a lot of artists seem to enjoy macros and flowers and / architects / engineers tend to take buildings / structures / geometric patterns - not exclusively, of course, but this is a pattern I have noticed.

What I find interesting is that my husband and I can both go to some place and take photos, yet we see things differently. Sometimes he will be taking big ships while I am taking macros of insects....or we can photograph the very same object and get different results. He tends to see the big picture while I focus on details.

I also think it has to do with our experiences. For instance, I realy got into taking macros when I realized that I could see things in the photos that I can't see with my own eyes otherwise. I also am into color and used to like to do cubistic paintings so many of my photos reflect my interests.

I personally have some fine art photographers who have influenced my style. These include Edward Weston, and Ruth Bernhard among others. I like to think of my own personal style as a conscious development from a combination from such photographic masters and my own creative eye. I think that is why it is important for serious photographers or fine art photographers to learn about the past masters of the genre. There is so much to learn from those who have walked before us (= I have found some tremendous books on famous photographers at used book stores, they are like fine gems to me.

You are exactly right. I try to vary my style but still come up with a recognizable portfolio. It has to be what we as photographers get use to as or personal preference in the end. I think it is just a personality we develop.
