I was originally going to buy a Canon. That was before I won some vouchers (through my job) for an on-line store. They didn't stock Canon, but had the Nikon D40. The vouchers covered the bulk of the price and I paid a little extra to get it. It meant I could have a DSLR 6 months earlier than I thought! Now, I wouldn't change from Nikon. What I'm getting at, like the others have mentioned, the reason for buying a particular camera is not based on the shots they take - They all have strengths and weaknesses so there isn't the 'perfect DSLR'. My personal choice was forced in a way, but I have no regrets. Quite the opposite.
If you are looking to buy a camera but don't know if it should be a Nikon, Canon, Sony, Pentax, etc.. etc.. then I can give you two bits of advice. Firstly, look at the range of accessories, lenses etc. Does it cover everything you could potentially need in the future? Once this has narrowed the field a little, go to your local camera shop and try the equivalent of each make - Then buy the one that feels right for you.

In my humble opinion, it doesn't matter. You will probably get all kinds of responses (canon is the best, nikon is the best), It is the photographer using light, speed etc; not the camera that makes 75% of the photo. Everyone will have an opinion because that is what they have read or what they are use to using. Personally, I like Sony products, but that doesn't mean they are the best. I'm more familar with Sony cameras (have owned 5 different ones, from 4 mp to present 14 mp.), so no the camera type doesn't make that much difference.

These guys are all absolutely right...great advise.
It's not about the camera, you are fooling yourself if you think otherwise.
My husband gave me a Canon digital Rebel for my bday last year with some great lenses,
and after taking pics with it, I went back to using my 4 megapixel Olympus and have since upgraded to a SONY cybershot.
Probably b/c it works best for a wide variety of pics and is ready to go when I need it
and it also great for travel.
We are both happy now since my husband uses the Rebel as a back up to his Canon 20D.

p.s. I chose the 40D because I knew I wanted canon (me and canon go way back) and I couldn't afford the 5D which was what i really wanted.

Among my best posted pictures are shots I took with my sony cybershot. I "upgraded" to a canon 40D because I wanted the versatility and control of changing lenses - but I probably could have waited longer because there was so much I still could have expanded if I had used my cybershot with manual settings. I say keep it simple until you have mastered the settings on your current camera or there is something specific you are trying to do that your current camera just isn't capable of. I also use a holga and a polaroid to get back to the basics and help me focus on composition and getting it right pre-processing.

No. Good photographers take good photographs with virtually anything. It's mostly about having an "eye", composition and understanding light.

There are some photographers I've seen using a pinhole camera made from a cardboard box create stunning photographs far far better that what I can do with my 5D. It's not the camera that makes the photographer. It's how the photographer makes use of and captures the light that makes the photographer.
