What Kind of Tripod to buy??

I got a pretty cheap tripod secondhand and it works fine for my night unless you are exposed and it's really windy. If you are getting your first tripod I wouldn't spend that much unless your plannin…

Hi Lawrence It's a nice shot. If you don't mind, can you tell me, how the silky water effect you produced. I am very much interested to know. Cheers... Venkat

Gender:
Male
Hometown:

About Me:
I am a PhD student at Warwick University studying microbiology. I have been into photography for about a year, but due to various excuses, haven't done anywhere near as much as I would like. Mainly because of work but I am also passionate about other interests. I've decided to put a bit more effort into getting out there and just taking more photos this year, and this community is hopefully the first step! I don't know if I really have a favourite type of photography, although I feel drawn to landscape, and am not really into taking photos indoors or of manipulated environments - but I quite like images like this, I just prefer to get outside.

I'm a keen tennis player, love music/gigs, comedy (Edinburgh fringe!), films, and popular science books.
My Equipment
Canon 400D with 17-55mm, and 55-200mm lenses
Terrible tripod
Various filters, shutter release etc.

I've never had any problems with the R72 filter except for the long exposures, usually around 1 sec at midday set at F11 or higher. With a faster lens maybe I can get a faster shutter speed.

Nope, i wish a have a dslr IR converted camera and that would be nice. It'll probably cost me around $700.00 because first i have to purchase a used dslr ( $300.00 ) then to have it IR converted, that'll cost me another $400.00 +.

If you're serious about IR, it's best to have a dslr converted to IR. it's an expensive process but it's worth it. The problem with IR using a filter like the R72 is the slow shutter speed even when you're shooting during the brightest day.

Glad you like it! Here is a "cut and past" of a comment I made to another member:

I have 7 tub feeders in my back yard and, at present, 1 hummingbird feeder. However it gets plenty of activity.

To get the picture I set up my camera on a tripod and prefocused just slightly past the one feeding point and used my remote shutter release
and sat back about 15 meters and waited. It took me 4 days to get it right. The feeder is in the shade so light was a problem. I wanted a shutter speed of 1/2500 sec but, because of the light, I had to settle for 1/500 sec with f/5.6 which didn't provide much a depth of field. As it turned out the lower shutter speed made the picture. I also had the ISO set at 400 which is fairly slow but very little noise.

I might also add that I consumed about 1 1/2 bottles of wine waiting for hummer to return.
