Hi Amanda, that's the traditional mask that bedouins used and some till today still wear. It comes in different shapes and honestly most of them feel uncomfortable but all the ladies (mostly elderly nowadays) I've seen wearing don't seem to mind it at all.
Jen, this is a nice photo and the impressive thing is that you managed to capture it, usually they don't like their photos to be taken.

Like everyone else, I find this photo quite arresting, and found myself scrolling back up to the top of the page to look at it again every time I clicked on the next page of comments. I was hoping to see someone explain what that is she is wearing over her face. I find myself wondering if she is as uncomfortable as she/the apparatus looks. You may have wished for a 'better' photo, but the one you captured is stunning. Technical perfection cannot compete with a raw image that reaches out and grabs you by the throat. I don't think you could have done much better.
