Hi, I have been a member of MyShutter space for a couple of months but had no idea this group existed! I'm quite excited to see that there are other people with disabilities that share my love of photography. I've always liked taking pictures, but haven't gotten very serious about it until this past year. I got my first DSLR, a Nikon D5000, for Christmas and am loving it. I am in a wheelchair due to having Spina Bifida. I've always faced challenges head on and love trying new things as much as possible. The one question/frustration that I am having right now that I'd like to get some feedback on from other wheelchair users is in regard to height. What I love about my D5000 is that the viewfinder can move in several different directions including 180 so that I can put the camera up a bit higher but still see what I am doing. This has worked well, but I still can't quite get the height I need when doing tripod work. I of course had to pick an area of interest "above" my head so to speak...sunsets/sunrises. So far to get angles that I really want to get, I usually have to get everything with the camera set, then hand the camera to my husband while trying to give him direction. That works, but I would like to have something where the shot is 100% in my control (I'm a bit of a control freak when it comes to my photography :)

Anyway, any suggestions would be great and I really look forward to getting to know all of you and hope you'll check out my pictures and leave comments please! I really want to get better so I can turn this into a career :)

I know what it feels like to get told that I need to be more realistic with my goals, and that still being a photographer is not something that is in the realm of possiblities for me. I became legally blind after Katrina, and since then have had all kinds of doors slammed in my face. Legally they cannot tell you we won't hire you because your disabled. Rejections, insults, and double talk is what you will get. I love taking photographs, and get told all the time how good they are, and that no one believes I am legally blind. Unfortunately it is the law that I have to tell employers and others I am. Just so everyone here knows, my vision is 20/100 in my right eye, and 20/300 in my left. Auto focus on cameras is a must for me now, but that is the only draw back. It is too easy for people to put restrictions on us, and turn a blind eye. My hope is that someday people will open up their close minds and things will change. Until then it will be like changing slavery, it will take time, and most of us will be long gone before something gives.

Hey Johnina, thanks for the support. I've done the whole "lawyer thing" and the judge ruled I could work, my attorney was pretty much a jerk and never made much of a case. I won't give up! I just got a call from Wal-Mart on Friday to come in on an interview, yes it involves stocking (groceries) but I could work in the photo department if an opening becomes available later. I'll ask about MSN pills, all they prescribe when I ask for relief is Naproxian.and all that does is make me sleepy

Barry, Don't give up on disability, I got refused at first, got a lawyer (they don't get paid until you when and then they get a percentage of your past settlement- the government pays from the time of disability which for me was a couple of years earlier) and by the time my case came up before a judge the judge said she's approved and please don't have this poor lady come up here. Unfortunitly hardly anybody gets disability without a lawyer and I've never known anybody to get it on the first try unless they were in a coma. Meanwhile try to find a pain specialist or neurologist who is more than a pill pusher. Different kinds of pain reacts to different treatment. The type of pain of pain and treatment for it needs to be handled by a specialist who understands that. I have fibromyalsia, arthitis, bursitis, neuropathy, carpal tunnel, chronic tendonitis and migraines. Each takes a different treatment including whether heat or cold works. Some I've learned by trial an error some from the docs. I will look and see what I can find for you to try. What has worked for me in the past is cream with MSM in it. The MSM pills also have helped, but please remember I am not a doctor. I use a nikon p90 because of it's light weight and the fact that it's built in lens is quite adaptable so I don't have to have the weight of extra lens to carry around

I had to sell my Pentax k200d due to the fact it was getting so heavy. I was denied SSI benefits, the government says I could work as a cashier, maybe so but they fail to realize that those jobs also require "heavy" lifting. It's tough for me to even pick up a gallon of milk without my shoulders reacting in great discomfort. It's been over 4 months since I posted to this topic and now the cold weather is affecting my shoulders :( Anyone know of any lotion or spray that numbs pain on the body, pain pills have never worked on me.

Thanks
Barry

Welcome to the group Johnina. It seems you are one of us, but you are doing very well with photography which is great.

I have MS, and I'm now in a power chair, and even have to use a lift to get in and out of bed. It's not the way I wanted my retirement to be, but I am getting a lot of photography accomplished. Without it my retirement would be nothing like what I had hoped it to be.

Keep shooting and processing your images. It will make life enjoyable.

This is one of my pics. It was taken by the side of the road as I cann't walk far and I had to find a tree to lean upon to steady myself; I lean against my side so that one arm is held steady and I hold the other arm tight against my side to steady it. Even with doing that I take multiple picture because there will be a number that will be blurry. Thank goodness I can delete and I don't have to buy film.
