Anyone know a good website I can sell my photos to?
Paul Wager Comment by Paul Wager on September 25, 2009 at 5:59pm
Hi Robert, DOF = depth of field, agency's are concerned only with pixel count, sharpness ie. everything shot at maximum DOF and with a fast shutter speed in perfect light and care nothing for artistic value or creativity. The fact is since the advent of digital and with every man and his dog trying to sell their photos they can pick and choose all they want and to make things easier they have decided that all their photos must meet these standards. Don't despair many of the best award winning photos would never pass their quality control so take your rejection as a compliment.

I have been trying to sell my work online for a while now, and I guess I am not getting it. out of around 1000 I have only had 9 accepted, and I find this very insulting. I buy calendars every year that have photos in them, and that uis the type of work I like to do. I get told I have lack of composition, or too much of image is out of focus. Or this one which I don't get: DOF not justified??? I have had photos rejected by both istock, and dreamstime. ( I stopped uploading to istock) The photos that have been rejected I have sold locally, and get lots of raves from my shows.
Someone help cause I don't get it, and maybe I never will, but I take insults to my work very personal, and I don't know anyone who doesn't.

Thanks guys for your advise. I have been thinking venturing into stock photography since i bought my digital camera. It's a Canon EOS 400d ( bought it because of financial restriction ) and was rejected by Getty/Gallo images. Although "PhotographersDirect"didn't mention of their hardware requirement, does anybody know if they have any?
Looking forward to more comments/advise....i'm off to go shooting for my stock. :) Cheers!

Hi Louise, you must first ascertain whether your photographs are of a high enough quality, uploading them here is a good start and ask for critical assessment, also ask friends for an honest appraisal and if possible seek the oppinions of professional photographers. Once you are satisfied you work is reaching the mark decide in what area of photography you want to work, there are many and once you have a name can be economically successful. Despite what all the adverts say selling micro is a disaster( read my previous comments). Selling through reputable libraries is difficult until you have a very good name and portfolio. You can sell prints at markets or through souvenire shops etc. but best of all financially is securing assignments such as local newspapers, local advertising, weddings, christenings etc.
