Read Tony's tutorial, it explains everything you need to know.

Chad, one question, how you use Luminosity Masks in dealing with Saturation and Bringing out details and textures?

Comment by Chad Ward on November 29, 2012 at 8:25am

Tony is the best place to learn the luminosity mask. I took a couple of days just practicing just to get the basics. After that you will learn easier and it will become second nature. It seems confusing at first but write down the steps on paper and practice them one by one until you understand them. I posted a link back at the beginning of a guy that does it similar but maybe not so technical. Go back through the comments and you will see it.

Chad Can you point me to a resource where I could learn about more practical application of Luminosity Masks, unlike Tony Kuyper. I would be glad if you can point me.

Almost everything I do is done within the luminosity mask, they control contrast, vibrance, saturation, detail, everything.

Chad, I know how to use luminosity masks. I would love to know a bit about your workflow, especially what you do for Contrast and bringing the colours to Life. And also, how you reveal the details...

By using channel selections and curves. You have to go to your channels tab to start. Go to this link, this is where I learned channel selections. http://goodlight.us/writing/luminositymasks/luminositymasks-1.html

This is very indepth, it will take a little bit to learn but this is the best way.

I am standing on top on an old volcano, known as a cinder cone in the Cinder Cone National Natural Landmark inside the Mojave National Preserve.
This was one of the most amazing places I have been simply because it is unknown and hard to get to. There are no signs and I couldn't find any good pictures of the place when I did some research. A friend of mine told me about it so we went to check it out yesterday and we were amazed!
To get here you will need a truck or suv because of the roads. Once you get to the area there are over 40 cinder cones. To get to the top you will have to climb about 300-400 feet through loose lava rock. Its a hard climb but it is worth it once you reach the top.
Last night the clouds and light were perfect. The foreground on top on the cone is littered with giant pieces of lava rock with bright green moss. The mounds in the distance are more cinder cones. This is the only image I had time to edit last night but there will be more to come.
Thanks.
