What features to look for in any compact camera?

My answer may sound strange to some people but I dont recommend a point and shoot camera. I recommend a good smart phone. My Lumia 920 has taken the place of a point and shoot for me. Just today I built a tripod adapter for it. Using the ProShot app and a few of the other lens apps for the 920 I am able to control iso, aperture, white balance, exposure, focus point, aspect ratio,  flash, burst mode, time lapse, and the app has grid lines and a very accurate level. We always have our phones with us so it becomes a no brainer for me personally.

This is the tripod adapter I just built. I used a GPS mount to start with then I placed a threaded stud in the back of the mount that was intended for a vent in your car. It will mount onto any standard tripod with a 1/4,20 thread. I havent used it yet but it seems to be built well enough to do what I intend for it, just a back up when I need it.

My friend has the 920 and the camera is really, really fantastic.

 

I purchased a point and shoot camera a few years back, and asides from the flash, I found the camera on my phone to be better (I had a Nokia too). Plus, it took standard batteries which didn't last long, so i had to keep purchasing replacements.

 

I also think the camera capabilites on mobile phones are raplidly changing, and if you upgrade your phone every 12-18 months, then you upgrade your camera too. As Brad says, most people always carry their phone with them at all times, and some photographers say the best camera is the one you have with you...
