Hi,

I am new to the site, I had a question, I am getting back into my photography hobby and I was wondering what you guys recommend for editing, ps cs4 or aperture, I have both and photoshop seems a little complicated. any suggestions would be appreciate it.
Thanks.
I attached a file of my brother and his fiancee, what would be the easiest editor to level the background? if at all possible. this was taken with canon 5D

CS4, you also have Bridge. Bridge lets you rename photos, rate them form 1-4, etc. You can also create a metadata for all your photographs. Of course, you want to copyright your work. I have never used Aperture. I am a Mac user but never used the program. Lightroom is an awesome program that you can also catalog your work. Check out and you can view FREE tutorials of adobe products. Hope this helps.

Photoshop & Aperture are not competitors—Adobe Lightroom & Aperture are the equivalent programs. They provide workflow management & some limited editing. Photoshop is a whole different puppy & allows for all sorts of manipulations not found in the other programs plus the creation of original (non-photo) art.

I own both (well all three). I use Lightroom rather than Aperture, but mostly because I'm so deep in Adobe's grasp. What I did with Aperture I liked too… I think it's a matter of style & how much you want the close Adobe integration.

BTW, it's very very easy to do level horizons in Lightroom (not so much in Photoshop ;-).

Now looking at your photo, you may want to keep the people in the position they're in & change the background to be level rather than just leveling the horizon. For that you'll need Photoshop & no small level of skill… it's why I make the big buck ;-)

Hi levelling horizon is quite a straight forward process, personally I use cs4 and to level your image took no more tha 30sec. In cs4 open image have rulers showing (view rulers) and bring down horizontal line to meet highest part of your horizon, and go to edit transform skew and move side marker to level horizon. You will have to crop but only slightly see my effort. As suggested loads of tutorials out on the web, good luck

In PS you can also use the Ruler Tool (under the Eyedropper), draw a line along your horizon & then choose Image > Image Rotation > Arbitrary. Your image will automatically be rotated to the ruler line.

Saves making the ruler lines—a matter of taste—but neither is as easy or as forgiving as Lightroom.

for me lightroom is for photographers and cs for graphics so it is more what you want to do editing or modifing.

I would agree that Lightroom is primarily a photographers tool, although I've been known to use it for graphic arts.

Photoshop however, in addition to being a fine graphic arts (and fine arts) tool is also a fabulous photographers tool. Therefore the plethora of books about Photoshop for Photographers… not to mention the "photo" in the name ;-)

And "cs" is not a great abbreviation for Photoshop, since there are many other Adobe CS applications (InDesign, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, After Affects, et.al.).

Hi, PS CS4 is a great tool and nothing compares to it. You can find so many tutorials on the internet, so you do not need to buy any books. I use Bibble Pro as a RAW convertor and PS CS3 for everything else. And the Lightroom is not designed for serious editing, it is a good raw convertor and good for playing with colors, so if you have the CS4 you should be happy, it is pretty expensive but great.

if you want to " edit" use lightroom if you want to spend a lifetime learning and want to modify mainly use ps cs4
main reason i use lightroom is the taging and most important nondestricive function the original is never touched in ps shame it is to late or you must keep copies before you start.i use both but for serious photo work like we did in the old days lightroom it is faster.best is try both and decide wich is better suited to you type of photography.

i had no problems with ps and lightroom...cause ive used both.....been using ps since version 3 :D and to carrie....i think it easy to level the horizon in ps..all you have to do is show the grid line..to make it perfect :D
