why doesn't anyone rate photos?? its what gets you noticed if you have enough votes or whatever.... also how come people rarely fav a photo? they will say how amazing it is but never favs.
I dunno just wondering.. would love it if people started doing this more.

Good question, I suppose I'm one of the guilty ones.... lol. For me, it's a case of commenting without necessarily feeling the need to rate.

Interesting question Hannah. I do rate but never fav - I don't collect so maybe that's why the latter. Sometimes, I feel that rating is over-rated (sorry) because human nature leads some to return stars that others have given them or simply to show friendship. Also, I am conscious that stars are given just for the choice of subject rather than from a technical perspective e.g. someone who lives in a scenic area has an advantage of appeal over someone in a relatively uninteresting urban environment. Hey ho!

heh I completely agree with what you said about the rating. The only thing is that on this site.. the more good rates you get.. the more likely your photo is going to be on the homepage when you log in.. get my drift?

Are you sure about that? What are your assumptions based on? I'm quite sure I've seen pictures becoming POTD without being rated by the community.

sometimes I rate, sometimes I fav...hardly ever look without commenting. POTD is chosen by admin like chris says, Your number of VIEWS tally gets u on the most popular tab, the more views the closer to the first pages u r....and the rating on pics you find on the top rated tabs....SO you will see your photo on the main photo page if you look under the tabs, and have been viewed or rated high and often or if your the POTD, so it does help ppl either way, to be seen. I have asked my buds to send me notices of new pics, so I can keep up with them, but I dont send out a notice unless asked to by someone...at least not yet o_O

i'm not a big fan of rating like giving 10 stars for a perfect shot...i'd rather leave a comment what i like or don't like about the picture and sometimes offer a suggestion to improve the shot.

I like the good vibes a nice comment given or taken sends. I'm not here to critique or be critiqued. Or rate and be rated. Just share.

I did, however, see where someone in one of these discussions a while back was trying to convince us that Ansel Adams was "a good printer, better in his younger years". Ratings, folks, are way over rated.

In contrast to Michael I am here not just to share but also to learn and to improve. I learn from mistakes so I'd love to be critiqued.

Ratings might seem like a good idea at first glance. If you have a large number of ratings for one photo, you got a pretty good derivation of the mean rating for this photo. But how valuable is this rating for you? You have no idea what it is based on since it is not normalized in any way. You don't know anything about the personal preferences of the voters (one might like landscapes more than the other). The knowledge of photography should also be taken into account. Were e.g. DOF and composition rated or does the rating reflect a very subjective point of view. So yes, I agree with Michael on this, I think ratings are overrated.

I believe comments are a better way to express what you think about a photo. I have pictures with a two star rating without any (negative) comments left. What does it tell me? NOTHING! A short comment stating the faults would be much more helpfull.

Anyhow... Although they are less valueable from the perspective of the one who gets them, ratings might still be usefull from the community's point of view. They roughly filter out "bad" pictures. If there are enough voters it is less likely for a rather bad picture to appear at the "best rated" page.

Bad spelling notwithstanding (nod to Chris!) I am pretty leery of taking criticism/critiquing from anyone in this forum, maybe because I have a few years of formal training under my belt and have been critiqued up the wazoo enough already, mostly because the internet breeds an atmosphere where one can be negative without any consequences. If I like your photo I will mention that in my comments. If I don't, well, I figure that is a personal preference and so I will just leave it alone. My picture sucks? Because you don't like it? Tough crappies, I say. I see talent and hard passionate work, that's enough for me. You won't ever see me rate anyting with stars, or lack thereof. You want critiquing, place your trust in someone with real knowledge and abilities, not some internet forum . Hmmmmm maybe I'll post a photo and see what this comment brings.....LOL Don't take you work so seriously, folks. Other people don't.

I am happy if someone looks at my photos never mind rating them. I am certainly not going to ask people to look at them.vain and just adds more e mails to delete.
