i like carrying just one lens but would not mine carrying a macro for flowers and insect if the improvement in image quality was justified.

105mm with f2.8 would be nice choice, Nikon and Sigma makes it.

What camera are you using???

Canon 100mm f/2.8L is or Canon 100mm f/2.8.

I don't know about Nikon

I am using a nikon d5100 witha sigma 18-200 lens

You could consider a reversing ring which will allow you to get macro shots with your 18-200mm lens reversed. You lose very little quality, have the facility to change the magnification ratio substantially by zooming and will allow you to venture into Macro without the expense of a macro lens. If you find you're addicted, you can at a later date buy a dedicated macro lens.

My reversing ring cost me £11.95, substantially less than a macro lens.

the only thing you'll need for this to work is a Depth of Field preview button. As when you remove and reverse the lens you lose automatic exposure metering and aperture control. I'm not sure about Nikon but when you remove a canon lens from its body, the aperture opens fully, and with a Sony lens it closes fully. So you use Av or Manual mode to select your aperture, press the DoF preview button and remove the lens at the same time without letting go of the button. Your lens is now locked at the correct aperture. You then mount the lens in reverse using the reversing ring, and manually expose using a combination of shutterspeed and ISO. The wider focal length you have your zoom set to, the higher the maginification. So at 18mm you are exceptionally close and it's very difficult to get good shots, but at 30-50mm you get great macro shots.

hope this helps.

I just bought a Sigma 50mm f2.8 Macro lens, for under $200, and I'll be going to an Orchid show this Sunday. I'll let you know how it works out

I got a chance to use the 50 today and have to say it is better than I am  :) Going to really learn to get the most out of this lens.

Cool shot..!! On amazon, this sigma lens sells new for $350+....did u buy new or from where did u buy ?

I bought it used from

KEH

in Georgia, rated as Like new -(minus) condition ( no box, caps or hood) for $165.

nice shot

I love my canon 100mm f2.8L macro. I have actually used it more for portraits, but it is super sharp for macro shots. My favorite lens next to my 50mm f1.4.
