I just bought a canon 50d...which I love but I have an issue with it. When I am standing close to my subject the picture turns out clear and sharp but as soon as I step back a few feet my subject appears blurry and out of focus when I am editing and zoom in to full size. What am I doing wrong? Is it the camera? I have it on high resolution and I refocus after stepping back. Please help as this is very frustrating. Thanks
1. Camera shake - make sure you have fast enough shutter speed to hand-hold. The rule of thumb is that you need to have a shutter speed that is equivalent to the focal length of your lens. So for example, if you are shooting a 50mm you need 1/50 sec, 200mm you need 1/200 sec, 300 mm you need 1/300 sec. etc..... If you don't have enough speed, decrease the aperture or boost the ISO.
2. Very shallow depth of field due to large apertures (small f/ number) - make sure you have a small enough aperture. At very large apertures there is only a very small amount of the target that will be in focus. For a 50mm f/1.8 lens (set at f/1.8) the depth of field will only be a few millimetres. There are lots of posts in the forums about depth of field - check them out.
I have the same problem with my nikon D90 when i accidentally switch off the Built-in Assist Auto focus. Somtimes camera Auto focus is poor then a built-in assist Auto focus helps to get it right. I do not know if you 50D will have this function.

Take two shot as you describe and post them here. That will help us to see what's going on.
Btw don't use auto mode if you don't really good lens, canon always picking smallest F number. Try to take few shot in P mode instead.
What lens do you using?
