Hi. I'm headed to Africa for my first (and could be only) safari. I have a Nikon D40 and the lens it came with as well as a 70-300 telephoto. I want to bring a fast point and shoot. Thinking of the Canon X10. Just want to have a back up p&s. I am debating if I should buy a wide angle lens? Any thoughts about wide angles or any other equipment I should really consider for safari purposes?
Lucky you. I'd definitely take a wide angle for the landscapes, a tripod for the sunsets/dawns and a teleconverter to extend the reach of your lens (at moderate cost and weight). Have fun.
Cape Town, one of the more beautiful places in South Africa, and then you visit two other beautiful countries. Keep your camera ready, I think you are going to take some wonderful shots. Enjoy every moment and travel save.
Happy shooting

Hi Rochelle. Looks like the guys have got you covered! Definitely sacrifice the P&S for a good Wide Angle - Shots you take with a P&S won't compare... One quesiton though. How are you carrying your kit around.? If you don't already have one, might I suggest a decent DSLR backpack - keeps your kit safe while keeping your hands free and your bag off the ground...
This one is top loading so holds the D40 perfectly and has padded space for extra lenses and other equipment. It'll also carry your laptop if needed! http://www.amazon.co.uk/Case-Logic-Computer-Backpack-Black/dp/B0009...
Have a great time!
Sounds like an amazing trip. I am really happy for you ( green of envy ). Are you going as part of an organized trip or you go on your own? I am asking this because time is going to be very important. You will find that, if you are part of an organized trip, the rest of the members are not going to wait for you to set the tripod, change the lens, fit the polarizer..etc. I would strongly recommend a point and shoot. Canon G9 can offer you most of the advantages of a dSLR while wrapped in a smaller package.
I am not sure about a wide angle lens. I mean...the chances of you being few cm away from a lion and trying to take a photo are quite slim but I can see its advantage if you do have the time to set the tripod and compose a landscape shot.
Dont forget to pack a dust blower. You are going to need it. (Change the lenses facing the camera down). You could also get a Memory Card Backup Storage Device unless you going to carry a laptop with you to upload you.
Looking forward to see the shots.
Good point. I'm doing part of the trip with a solo approach and part with others so there will be a little bit of compromise I'm sure. Thanks for the good tips!
Nice too..... :-) (but it seems your lens has not been clean, when I look at the background, well, the spots is easy ro remove)
Have you used any edit program??
