Here's something else I was asked....

Is manipulating a photo in Photoshop somehow cheating??
Does it really matter? or is what matters the final image - no matter HOW it got to that point?

So, if you don't have all those fancy gizmos on your camera, then you shouldn't have to feel guilty about fixing up your photos on Photoshop, eh?
And if photoshop is cheeting, so are all those gizmos!! Right?

I'm with you, Frank!!

However, for the sake of time, lately, I've been working on getting the image right when I take the photograph. Photo editing can be very time consuming. So if I can get a quality photo in a shorter time, I'm all for it.

Besides, I'd sooner be taking photos than photoshopping. As a graphic designer, I have to do enough of that sort of stuff in my work, and it stops being fun.

I completely agree with Frank here. A photo is not real as such - it is always manipulated to a greater or lesser extent.

But I also think, like you Jeanette, that any photographer out there should try and get the photo right from the beginning. Yes it saves time in post editing, but if you actually commit yourself to "getting it right" then it is a great way to actually learn more about photography.

I use Photoshop on every single photo I take. Sometimes I just adjust the levels a bit, perhaps crop unwanted clutter. Other times I will try to experiment with filters, just to see what kind of effect I can achieve. I never feel like cheating though, cause cheating applies to a situation with competition. And to me, the essence of photography is not competition - it is art. And art is individual, hence not competition. Ok, that argument was a bit thick on the 'Ergo'-side, but I hope you get my point.

right on, pinholes are the best way to learn.
i also think every one should shoot in full manual, you will be amazed at what you can get with that

Well, I don't have the CS programs, I do have the photo elements and I use it for cropping & putting names on my pictures, I want to learn it someday. I have nothing against it. And for now, I am happy with my pictures the way it is.

I knew a photographer once that took a lot of photographs during the evening. In some of his images, he would open the shutter and while the image was being recorded he would take a flashlight and highlight some of the areas he wanted lighter in his final photo. It made for some amazing photographs. Our instructor at the time, who is a landscape photographer, was a little upset about the manipulation. Finally they came to an agreement that in the description of the photograph, the manipulation would be mentioned so people were not "fooled". My point is that creating a photograph is an artistic effort which includes everything involved with producing the image up until it is displayed for the public. I have heard of photographers who take the image, print it, and then paint the photograph with watercolors to add effects. In creating your "vision", I believe anything, and everything, is available to you.

I'm thinking that the answer to this all depends from what angle you're looking at it. If it as an artist, well almost anything goes, just as long as you create the final image that you intend.
However, I guess, from a photographer's viewpoint, a good photo won't need to be manipulated. It has all the elements in it from the beginning.
Does that sound fair?

I have used photoshop as an artist for years. I know artist that color photos with adobe programs and sell them as painting and reproductions of paintings. Their work looks like a photo and they are considered great artist in my area. It seems like cheating to me, but they laugh all the way to the bank.

I cannot compete with the computer with a brush so I now just do photos and I no longer have any interest in doing it for money but I do donate my work to charities like food banks and shelters.

has any one here worked in a dark room.

a lot of the things a person does in the darkroom are on photo shop. burn, doge, crop. heal, clone, solorize, contrast, color filters. were used on the greatest b&w white photos.

others stuff could be done using the camera, like multiply exposers. I did this and one of them are on my photos.

Photoshop is like the new age dark room. Most ppl uses the basics. and they are the same as the dark room stuff.

then we come to the manger editing that is impossible with only a camera or a dark room. Even still this could be copied in a dark room. but would take alot of paper and time.

it is called painting with light it is a form of 'editing' and sometimes easier than doing it in Photoshop. I have done it quite successfully with trees and photographing THIS windmill in the outback - see attachment. The 'unedited' picture is on my space. It is the windmill in the outback lit up against the darkened sky. I open the shutter for say 20-30 sec depense on the effect I like to achieve and switch on a 1mill lumin torch and highlight the windmill.
