Hi guys,
I was wondering if anyone has any useful advice for me. I run my own online jewellery boutique and I need to redo all of the photos on my website. The problem I have when photographing silver is that it tends to look gold in the photos. I honestly do not know how to use my camera like I should, I have tried reading the booklet, but it's all Russian to me =)

I have a Casio EX-Z75.

My questions are:

What are the ideal settings?

What sort of lighting should I use, and if using natural sunlight, would it be better to have it behind me when taking the photo, or behind the photo I am taking a picture of?

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated =)

Thanks

Sally

Hiya, thanks for your reply. I know lighting is a huge factor in this, any artificial light made everything look gold, so I went with sunlight, which so far has been the best. I haven't touched the settings on my camera, and I know I should play around with them, it's just scary when you don't understand everything, you know?

Someone also told me to press a button that looks like a flower, which is apparently good for photographing objects up close, I don't think my camera has that, would it or could it be under something else?

Thank you so much -)

Hey, thanks for your reply. I just took a look at my camera. Do you know what ASO settings are? Also I have something similar to what you mentioned... I can see daylight, overcast, shade, day/whitef lourescent, daylight flourescent, auto - would it be daylight flourescent?

Thanks SO much

Hey Denny
I just had another look and I think I do have a tungsten setting, I will definitely mess with those settings this weekend when I try and reshoot my pictures.

You were right when I said ASO I mean ISO, had a little blonde moment there. I am not sure what my default settings are, but I am going to guess they aren't over 100, I'll look tonight.

I can wait to try out the different settings and show you what I come up with =)

Thanks so much!

Hi sally, you definitely should set the white balance on your camera to achieve best results. I took a few pictures of silver jewelery and I used window lighting on a cloudy day, I found cloudy days are better cause the light isn't as yellow like it would be on sunny days. I don't have any backdrops or anything to lay it on so I used a piece of paper and it looked half decent. If you lay the jewelery on colored felt or another kind of colored material chances are the color may show in the jewelry so thats why I used white. I have attached a shot I took earlier this year.

Hiya. I'll mess with the white settings this weekend. I was so unsure as to use a white base or black velvet. I am being told both by lots of different people lol. I love how silver your ring looks

i was working in jewelry for 5 years in 18ct and 22ct taking pictures of jewelry is really good idea believe you can take good pictures it depend what kind of jewelry you want to take pictures of if its silver or gold in gold always make sure that the background in dark black which will give you good effect and make it impresive

The jewelry is probably looking goldish in color because of the white balnce your camera is choosing to use. You would need to set a custom white balance in your camera to correct this or you could change it in photoshop. I did a bit of jewelry work early last year and found that using a light tent and a greycard made a big difference. Check out this site for some pointers. http://tabletopstudio.com/ This is by no means a professional lighting setup, but you can get good results with this. Using a greaycard can also help with the whitebalance issue. see http://www.whibal.com/ for info on this.
